Beautiful sculpture?  Sort of.

It's a hood ornament from a 1929 Chevrolet Viking Mascot.

Given America's adoration and love affair with the automobile it's
not surprising that hood ornaments and radiator caps have been
popular collectibles for over 100 years.

Until about 40 years ago, finding a cool hood ornament was as
easy as driving down to the local junk yard and buying one that
came off a wrecked car.  But antique and vintage ornaments have
become big business - many selling for thousands of dollars.

It really is a thing of beauty:
A 1941 lucite Pontiac Indian Chief ornament on sale for $385.

For $150 you can be the proud owner of this amber
lucite and aluminum ornament from a 1952 Pontiac.

This vintage Cadillac Eldorado ornament is priced at less
than $10 - quite a bargain for a beginning collector.

Here are two views of a rare 'dog bone' radiator cap from the 1920's:

Price?  $175!

A stunning Art Deco Winged Goddess radiator cap available for $250.

It's not unusual to find vintage ornament accessories at flea markets
and classic car meets.  For those who can't afford the expensive car that
is attached to the ornament it's the next best thing.
